Flooring options for your new Home - BuildMyGhar
The flooring of a house reflects the personality of its dwellers. Flooring is a timeless architectural element that the family will enjoy for many years and hence is the biggest décor element in the interior planning. While the customer is spoilt for choice these days, it is important to choose flooring that goes with the entire theme of the décor as well as its end usage. It needs to be aesthetically appealing and add a sense of personality to the space at the same time being practical so it can meet the demands of the customer. Depending on that, following are common flooring options that can be considered:
Tiles are the most versatile flooring with high durability and easy maintenance. These are available in a wide variety – ceramic, mosaic, porcelain, rustic etc. Providing contemporary look, tiles have been in great demand in Indian market due to the affordability quotient. Tiles are suitable for bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms as they are water-resistant as well as easy to clean. However, tiles can get cold and also slippery and hence are not really suitable for old people and children. At the same time, tiles can add an instant dramatic effect to any room.
This is the most extensively used flooring in India due to easy availability. These are ubiquitous and are used almost anywhere – exteriors or interior flooring. The flooring is dirt resistant, easy to clean and extremely durable. However, it gets easily stained and not an ideal option for places where spilling is common – i.e. kitchen, kids room etc.
Wooden floors add warmth to the space while making it look more spacious. Being available in many patterns, colors and textures, this flooring makes a room look richer. Consequently, there has been a rising demand from the aspirational urban consumer in India. However, this can be a noisy option and not particularly suitable for spaces like reading rooms or pooja rooms. Since are generally made from softer variety of wood, wooden floors are subjected to easy wear and tear as well making them kids and pet unfriendly. These are best suited for large, moody spaces with a lot of character.
The most ecofriendly homes would have concrete floors as these are very long lasting and easy to maintain. With advanced technology, concrete floors are now available in variety of colors and textures. The floor instantly adds a touch of bohemia, freewheeling spirit while lending flair of minimalism. Add flea market finds to a room with concrete flooring and its set for a carefree vibe with artistic expressions. The floor however needs to be sealed properly to avoid seepage. Being excessively hard, these are children unfriendly.
In addition to the above, there are other large varieties of flooring available such as carpet, laminates, epoxy, jute etc. It is imperative to understand the end usage of each room and hence decide the flooring accordingly. Invest in a floor that’s long lasting, where you can sit cross-legged and feel at home.
Happy Home Building!!
