With the world’s population growing leaps and bounds in the last few decades, there has been unprecedented exploitation of natural resources to provide better quality life globally. What is Green Building?
Green buildings are those home and commercial buildings that are designed to be environmentally sustainable. These buildings optimize the use of energy, water, and building materials during construction, and also after construction in the day-to-day management.
The globally recognized certification for Green buildings is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which is a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of green buildings and homes. There are various LEED certifications available including LEED for construction, LEED for core and shell, LEED for Schools, Commercial interiors etc.
Some of the key points to consider while building a ‘Green’ home include:
Roof Material: Use material that can reflect the sun rays to keep the roof and hence the overall room temperature lower. You can consider using reflective paints or tiles that help in reducing the roof temperature.
Wall Insulation: Try blow-in cellulose or fiberglass insulation to ensure that the ambient temperature is insulated from the external heat
Water Management and Rainwater Harvesting: India gets seasonal rains and yet most of the rainwater gets wasted, as there are very few homes that use rainwater harvesting.
Solar Energy: India gets the sunshine for more than 300 days in a year and hence well positioned to use solar energy for regular home energy requirements. The use of LED lamps instead of incandescent or CFLs can lead to optimal energy usage.
Smart Appliance: Now, most of the appliances come with star ratings that can lead to efficient use of electricity within homes. While they might come at a premium, they lead to enhanced energy savings. Hence, consider using air conditioners, Refrigerators, Television having high energy ratings, and even smart lighting that can switch on and off automatically via motion detection systems.
